Tucked at the base of the Cumberland Plateau, Cowan is known for its scenic views, welcoming spirit, and deep railroad roots. Visitors who find their way here often come looking for a slower pace and leave with a deeper appreciation for the stories woven into the landscape.

The town's railroad heritage is front and center at the Cowan Railroad Museum, where locomotives, boxcars, and steam engines invite exploration. Just beyond town, the Cowan Tunnel stands as one of the area's most remarkable historic landmarks. Completed in the early 1850s, this 2,200-foot railroad tunnel was considered a major engineering achievement of its time and remains in use today. Its role during the Civil War and its continued operation offer a rare, tangible connection between past and present. After construction is complete, the Mountain Goat Trail will lead over the tunnel into Cowan.
